If a commercial property suffers insured damage, notify Webber Insurance or the insurer as soon as practical.
What should I do first? #
Where it is safe to do so:
- Protect people from immediate danger.
- Contact emergency services where required.
- Take reasonable steps to prevent further damage.
- Secure the property.
- Take photographs.
- Preserve damaged property where practical.
Emergency repairs can sometimes be necessary to make the premises safe.
What information may be required? #
Depending on the claim:
- Date and time of loss.
- Description of what happened.
- Photographs or video.
- Police report details where relevant.
- Repair quotations.
- Building plans.
- Property valuation.
- Tenant information.
- Lease details.
- Rental records where Loss of Rent is claimed.
Can I start permanent repairs immediately? #
Emergency work may be necessary.
For substantial permanent repairs, allow the insurer an opportunity to assess the damage before committing to major costs where practical.
The insurer may appoint:
- Loss adjusters.
- Builders.
- Engineers.
- Other specialists.
What if the tenant cannot occupy the premises? #
Tell Webber Insurance.
If the policy includes Loss of Rent or Business Interruption cover, rental income losses may also need to be documented.
Keep records of:
- Rent normally payable.
- Rent actually received.
- Lease obligations.
- Outgoings.
- Communications with tenants.
Should damaged property be thrown away? #
Avoid disposing of significant damaged items before the insurer has had an opportunity to assess them unless disposal is required for safety or to prevent further loss.
