General Advice vs Personal Advice

When we talk about insurance, the guidance you receive depends on whether we are giving general advice or personal advice.

General advice provides information about an insurance product but does not take your personal objectives, financial situation, or needs into account. For most retail insurance, such as home, motor, or landlord’s insurance, our default approach is to provide general advice. This helps you understand what a policy includes without recommending whether it is suitable for your circumstances. If you prefer a recommendation tailored to your situation, you can request personal advice at any stage, and we offer opportunities to do so throughout the transaction.

Personal advice takes your individual circumstances into account before we recommend a policy. When you request personal advice for a retail insurance product, we consider relevant factors such as your needs, goals, and risks, and we explain the reasons for our recommendation, including any key limitations.

Wholesale insurance operates differently. Products such as professional indemnity, public liability, cyber insurance, and business packages have fewer disclosure requirements than retail insurance. We may still provide general or personal advice, depending on the information you provide, although our compliance obligations differ from those for retail clients. Our recommendations in the wholesale space are based on the details you share about your business, its operations, and the risks you face, allowing us to tailor our guidance appropriately.

At Webber Insurance, we make it clear when we are providing general advice and when personal advice is available. If you would like help understanding which type of advice applies to your situation, our team is here to assist. Our Financial Services Guide also provides additional information.
