Engineer registration and Professional Indemnity Insurance requirements vary between Australian jurisdictions.

Requirements can depend on:

• Engineering discipline
• Type of professional engineering service
• Building classification
• Whether the work is within the building industry

An engineer located in one state can still be subject to another jurisdiction’s registration rules when providing services for a project there.

Queensland #

Professional engineering services in or for Queensland generally need to be provided by, or under the relevant supervision of, a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) unless an exemption applies.

The RPEQ Code of Practice requires registered engineers to take reasonable steps to procure and maintain Professional Indemnity Insurance appropriate to the services they provide.

Victoria #

Registration is mandatory for professional engineering services provided in or for Victoria in the prescribed areas of:

The ACT Professional Engineers Registration Scheme commenced on 6 March 2025.

Registration currently applies to professional engineering services in:

Specific insurance is not required merely to apply for registration, but the Code of Practice requires registered engineers to take reasonable steps to hold adequate Professional Indemnity Insurance appropriate to their services.
