What is an insurance assessor and what do they do?
AI Doc Summarizer Doc Summary

An insurance assessor is appointed to gather information about a loss and report findings to the insurer. Assessors are commonly used for property, motor, plant and other physical damage claims.

What an assessor may do #

  • inspect the damaged property, vehicle or equipment
  • take photographs and record the circumstances
  • review repair quotes, scopes of work and invoices
  • discuss the damage with you, repairers or other relevant parties
  • request documents or supporting evidence
  • estimate the cause, extent and cost of the loss

The assessor usually reports to the insurer. The insurer considers the report together with the policy wording and other evidence when deciding coverage and settlement. The assessor does not necessarily make the final claim decision.

How to prepare #

Provide accurate information and keep photographs, receipts, quotes, maintenance records and other evidence requested for the claim. Ask for clarification if you do not understand a question or proposed scope of work.
