Insurance requirements for Building Inspectors vary depending on the state or territory, the services being provided and the type of registration or licence held.
Victoria #
Registered Building Inspectors in Victoria are required to hold Professional Indemnity Insurance that meets the prescribed requirements.
The Building and Plumbing Commission requires evidence of compliant Professional Indemnity Insurance when granting or renewing relevant building practitioner registrations.
Queensland #
In Queensland, Professional Indemnity Insurance is required for certain licence classes.
This includes the Completed Residential Building Inspection contractor licence. The QBCC requires applicants and licensees to meet the applicable Professional Indemnity Insurance requirements.
Other inspection-related licence classes can also have separate insurance requirements.
Other states and territories #
Requirements vary throughout Australia. Depending on your location and the services you provide, Professional Indemnity Insurance may be:
- A licensing or registration requirement
- Required under a professional or industry membership
- Required by a client or contract
- Recommended due to the professional liability exposure created by inspection work
Public Liability Insurance may also be relevant, particularly where you attend residential, commercial or construction sites.
