An endorsement is a document that changes, adds to or modifies the terms of an insurance policy.
It can apply when the policy is first issued, during the policy period or at renewal.
An endorsement might:
- Add an insured activity or location
- Change an insured name
- Change a limit or excess
- Apply a special condition
- Add or amend an exclusion
- Extend or restrict cover
- Note an Interested Party
- Otherwise alter the standard policy wording
An endorsement does not necessarily broaden cover. Some endorsements restrict the policy or impose additional requirements.
How should endorsements be read? #
Endorsements should be read together with the policy schedule and wording.
Where an endorsement changes the standard wording, the policy should be interpreted subject to that amendment.
Review endorsements when the policy is issued and at renewal.
