Yes, potentially.
South Australian Building Indemnity Insurance is not limited to businesses that describe themselves as general builders.
The requirement can apply to a licensed Building Work Contractor entering into a contract for eligible domestic building work.
When can Building Indemnity Insurance be required? #
The work will generally need to:
- Require development approval
- Be valued at $20,000 or more
Whether you are responsible for arranging the insurance also depends on:
- Your licence
- The work being undertaken
- The contract structure
- Who contracts with the homeowner
What if I am a subcontractor? #
If you are engaged by a principal builder as a subcontractor, the principal builder will generally arrange Building Indemnity Insurance for the overall eligible project.
If you contract directly with the homeowner for eligible domestic building work, the obligation may instead apply to you.
Do I need eligibility first? #
Yes.
Before Webber Insurance can arrange a job-specific certificate through our QBE process, the contractor must have the required Building Indemnity eligibility.
QBE determines whether eligibility and individual project applications can be accepted.
Contact our team before signing the contract if you are unsure whether Building Indemnity Insurance applies to your work.
