Contract Works Insurance is primarily designed to insure the construction works themselves.
Tools, plant and equipment can require additional cover.
How can tools be insured? #
Depending on the arrangement, portable tools and equipment may be covered through:
- A tools or equipment section under the Contract Works policy
- General Property Insurance
- A separate Plant and Equipment Insurance policy
What about theft from a vehicle? #
Theft cover can be subject to conditions involving:
- Locked vehicles
- Forced entry
- Overnight storage
- Where the vehicle is parked
- Locked toolboxes or compartments
- Item or claim limits
Do not assume tools are insured simply because they are being carried to or from a construction site.
What about larger plant? #
Items such as:
- Excavators
- Loaders
- Generators
- Compressors
- Trailers
- Lighting towers
- Other mobile plant
can require dedicated Plant and Equipment cover.
Whether equipment is registered does not by itself determine the correct policy. Road use, equipment type and business use also matter.
Vehicles primarily used on public roads may instead require Commercial Motor Insurance.
