What is Home Insurance

Last Updated: June 4, 2025

Home Insurance protects the physical structure of your home and, in most cases, the belongings inside it. It covers risks like fire, storm damage, burglary, and vandalism, with policies typically split into building insurance, contents insurance, or both.  If you work from home, it’s essential to verify whether your home policy covers business items, such as laptops or inventory, or if you require separate business insurance for these purposes.  Home insurance is essential for homeowners and is often required by lenders if you have a mortgage. Keep in mind that it generally won’t cover investment properties, as landlord insurance is typically used for this purpose.

What us the difference between Home Insurance & Landlords Insurance

Home Insurance is designed for owner-occupiers, covering the home you live in, including the building and your personal belongings. This cover can include contents cover, temporary accommodation, and liability protection.  Landlord’s Insurance is for people renting out a residential property. It focuses on tenant-related risks, like loss of rent, damage caused by tenants, and legal costs associated with tenancy disputes. It can also include building and contents cover if needed.  If you live in the property, you need home insurance. If you’re leasing it out, landlord’s insurance is the right choice.
